Metabolic Research Laboratories

Research focus

My role involves the day-to-day management of the Histology Core, providing a range of histological services and facilities to support researchers across the Institute and wider University. This includes overseeing tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining for a wide variety of research projects.

Background and experience

I have always had a strong interest in biology and began my career over twenty years ago as a junior histology technician. During that time, I have worked across a range of sectors including pharmaceuticals, clinical trials, and academia. These experiences have provided me with a broad understanding of histological techniques and their application in different environments. I joined the IMS-MRL to continue developing my laboratory, technical, and management skills within a collaborative and research-focused setting.

Working at the IMS-MRL

I supervise the Histology Core Facility, managing a busy and varied workload that supports research across multiple disciplines. My work involves processing tissue samples for microscopic analysis, enabling researchers to visualise whole tissue structures down to single cells and RNA molecules. I also provide training to researchers who wish to develop their own histological skills.

As someone always keen to improve processes and drive positive change, I am a qualified Lean Practitioner and Change Manager. I am also Chair of the Technicians and Research Assistants Committee and a member of the University’s Technical Managers Steering Committee. I value the opportunity my role provides to collaborate with researchers, improve laboratory operations, and contribute to the wider technical community within the University.
