Congratulations to Professor Stephen O'Rahilly from the IMS-MRL and Professor Jens Juul Holst (Copenhagen University, Denmark) who are joint winners of the Distinguished Service Award presented at the 2nd Lund Spring Symposium taking place in Sweden this week. Professor Holst co-discovered the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that has an important role for various bodily functions and for the development of type 2 diabetes. Professor O’Rahilly, who is Director of the MRC Metabolic Diseases Unit at the IMS and Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and Medicine, has made significant contributions to the understanding of genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying human disorders of energy balance and metabolism and his award lecture at the conference is entitled: 'Hormones, metabolism and behaviour-lessons from human genetics'.
