Congratulations to Steve O’Rahilly and Sadaf Farooqi on delivering the 2022 Royal Society’s Croonian Lecture on 14 April 2022 to a packed auditorium at The Royal Society.
The Croonian Medal is the Royal Society’s premiere lecture in biological sciences and is very distinguished. Previous winners from Cambridge include John Gurdon, Fred Sanger, Aaron Klug and César Milstein. Sadaf and Steve did an excellent double act, and the lecture was both entertaining and included a number of new insights. Their approach of investigating extreme human phenotypes and using these to understand genetic control mechanisms has been strikingly successful, and has already delivered treatments for some people. Importantly, Steve and Sadaf gave generous and detailed acknowledgements of the teams, and the patients and families that have delivered the discoveries. Success in modern science is usually based on effective teams, and it’s really important that we should all recognise this. All in all, a terrific event which I scored 11 out of 10…
