Technology is revolutionising the way people manage diabetes, helping patients maintain healthier blood sugar levels while reducing the burden of day-to-day care.

For a long time, managing the condition meant a relentless cycle of finger-prick blood tests, precise carbohydrate counting, and manual insulin injections. Today, ground-breaking research is replacing much of that daily stress with automated, wearable technology.

At the forefront of this change are hybrid closed-loop systems, often called an artificial pancreas. These systems represent a massive leap forward in care, keeping blood sugar levels stable while freeing people from the constant mental burden of managing their condition.

As part of their 'Gamechangers' series, the NIHR  are featuring the work of Professor Roman Hovorka, Professor of Metabolic Technology at the IMS-MRL, University of Cambridge, who has led ground-breaking research on the artificial pancreas to provide insulin automatically.  His work is supported by the NIHR Cambridge Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and NIHR Cambridge Clinical Research Facility (CRF).
